I hate MS Word, but I find that I can't get rid of it just yet. I love Pages, but I need the thesaurus capabilities of word. I need to be able to right click on a word and have synonyms come up in that very menu, no opening dictionary or another pop-up. Anyone know of another program that will do this?

If Word does what you need why do you 'hate' it? Just asking that's all....

Thesaurus? There's a fully functional dictionary built right into MacOS X. It can give definitions, synonyms, antonyms and even web sourced information (wikipedia).

I use the Dictionary's thesaurus function each time I run out of expletives to use.

There are just two reasons to use Word:
  • You like it.
  • You need to exchange files with other Word users.
If your reasons don't fall into these two categories, then there are numerous alternatives that will serve you well. exegete77's suggestion of Nisus Write Pro is a good one.

I think we're getting off base on the topic at hand.
I'm sure Nisus and others are great programs, but I am just looking for a program that has a right-click synonym list.

That's all.

Any suggestions?

It's not via right click, but if you hit Cmd-Opt-D you can get the dictionary definition of any word, and click to switch the thesaurus from there. Dunno if there's a setting to make the thesaurus the default, if that's what you want to use it for.

Note that you have to select some text first, for this to work. Also, it works best in Services-aware Mac applications.

No select. Just hover cursor over word and type Command + Option + D ;) But its only available in Apple Apps I believe.

Didn't know that. I assumed that all Services things require something selected first. Guess I was wrong... learn something new every day I visit these forums.:):D
