Want to burn double layer on Matsishta

When I bought my MacBook Pro, I was told it would burn double layer DVD. I'm trying to verify that now, but it doesn't list that capability in system profiler.

Is it possible to update firmware so that this capability is obtained?
Am I misreading specs?

(This is my first foray onto these forums, and after a few years I'm just starting to try to get as much out of my mac as possible. Sorry if this is boring/pedestrian/misguided.)

You can, but make sure they are DVD+R DL discs.

DVD-R DL will not work.
