Want to burn multiple epsiodes to a DVD in DVD Format, best way?

I have some .avi files I would like to convert to DVD Format. Then I would like to make a menu, and burn them to a DVD. I'm guessing I can only put about 2 or 3 on a DVD.

What are the steps and programs to use to make this happen?

I've messed around with iDVD but I cannot figure out how to compress the DVD files on iDVD if I want to add an extra on it.

So basically, for a beginner, what would be the steps and programs to use to be able to convert a .avi to DVD format and then burn to a blank DVD-R so I can watch them in a DVD Player.

Drag and drop the video files and click burn. There are also more options if you even feel like messing around with them.
