I've been in the market for a backup hard drive lately since I've had my iBook for about 2 years and I'm afraid that the hard drive will fail eventually. I know I should have done it sooner, but better late than never, right?
So I was on OTC and found a couple of enclosures I like, since I might upgrade in capacity later on, and I don't want to be paying for the enclosure multiple times. The firewire 400 one is nice and cheap, but I decided on a usb 2/ firewire one, since I want to be able to also connect it to my family's pc if I have to, as well as connect it to my mac when the only firewire port is occupied by something else.
As for the drive, I was thinking around 120gb, and I could partition it and use it as a backup for my internal 60, as well as a space to put stuff I can't fit on the internal. But then I thought, how would that stuff be backed up? I want to keep a decent portion of my internal drive free so it doesn't fragment and whatnot, which has been around a consistent 10GB. So I was thinking I would buy a new, bigger internal 2.5" drive also for around 60/70 dollars, and an external for backup to match the price (probabaly a seagate for both drives). This would leave me with a setup of two drives of equal capacity -- one internal and one external.
But the problem is that I can't justify the need for a new internal drive. I download large ign/gametrailers videos daily, but I don't really need to save them do I? What pains me is when I rip TV show episodes off my season DVDs to put on my iPod Touch, it takes overnight for like 2 episodes because of my little G4, so deleting and re-ripping is a pain. I don't want to get a larger backup hard drive and an internal to match and feel like it was a waste of money, but I'd feel dumb buying a 60gb backup drive to match the internal, and feel like I'd outgrow it soon.
Just on a side note, I also don't want to spend too much on hard drives now, as the new flash drives are coming out and those look sweet, and I'd never have to worry about hardware failure again -- only corruption. I'm getting a new MacBook by 2010; do you think this will become the norm by then?
What do you think I should do? I have quite a few things factoring into this decision and I'm very confused and hesitant, as I usually am when buying things that take a significant chunk out of my savings.
P.S.
I only have just enough money saved up for an external enclosure and two hard drives of about 120GB, which wouldn't allow me to get Leopard due to a lack of money. But if I just bought the 60 external and the enclosure, I still wouldn't have enough money for Leopard, but I'd at least be part of the way there.
