I will be getting the iphone 4 when it comes out and am looking to give away my old iphone 3g.

My simple question is there anyway to use the iphone without a cell phone plan? It basically just needs to be the iPod touch, I do want it to be able to use wifi though. How would I go about doing this? Thanks.

I saw on tipb.com that theres an option on OS 4 that allows you to turn off all cellular data.

Simple, just take out the SIM card. No celluar service to the phone means, no phone call, no data service & data texting. At this point, everything is now via wifi like the iPod touch. Doesn't require jailbreaking. You can also leave iPhone in airplane mode so the phone doesn't attempt voice or data requests.
