I want to test out some of the Dolby Atmos trailers to test my DN1080 and dial in settings. I have a PS3, which is too old. I have a Roku Ultra, but can't find any channels on it that have a demo. I have a Macbook Pro with a USB-C to HDMI cable that I use to hook my computer up the the TV sometimes. I thought that might be my best bet. When I play one of the downloaded Dolby trailers in MP4 format, the receiver only detects 2-channel stereo. I tried playing the video from iTunes, and VLC, and same result. I tried messing with audio settings I read about on various websites, but nothing shows 5.1, only 2.0. I don't know if it's my Macbook settings, VLC settings, or maybe USB-C to HDMI doesn't allow 5.1? I also tried Airplay, which played audio, but only 2.0. Any ideas?

Burn a normal 1080p Bluray and put it into your PS3.
PS airplaying these Dolby demo MP4-s (with DD+ Atmos) works to aTV4K.
It won’t directly to DN1080 because it supports only audio airplay (aka AirTunes). All atmos is in video files presently.

Unfortunately I have an old "fat" PS3, and everything I've read said only the "Slim" PS3 model supports bitstream audio. I also don;t have an Apple TV. Thanks for the info.
I downloaded VLC, which I think should support bitstream of audio, but couldn't get settings correct. I'll have to mess with it some more.
To bitstream HD audio (TrueHD, DTS-HD, etc.), you will need to have a protected audio path (hardware and software) from the MacBook to the receiver for Atmos over TrueHD. I don't believe any MacBooks support this feature.

Agree with what others have advised. You need to bitstream all the way to the AMP and let it do the decoding. Neither the Mac or the ROKU support bit streaming. I have both devices in my system but achieve what you are trying to do by bit streaming from a Nvidia Shield.
