So I just tried to update to 10.13.1 and it got stuck on the boot screen, instead of showing an apple, it showed a no/no access symbol. I eventually booted into recovery mode and now I am back to Sierra.

My mac should be supported, but does anyone have any idea on what I need to do? I have read something about the file management system changing to APFS? but I really don't understand what that means or if that could be messing me up somehow.

Thank you for your help.

Do you have the full 10.13.1 installer file in your Applications folder?

If so, then do this:
1. Get a USB flashdrive 16gb or larger. Initialize it to HFS+ with journaling enabled.

2. Download ONE of the following (free) apps:
a. Boot Buddy
or
b. DiskMaker X
or
c. Install Disk Creator

3. Use the app to create a bootable USB flashdrive version of the installer.

4. Boot from the flashdrive and attempt the install that way.

NOTE:
To boot from flashdrive, do this:
1. Power down all the way off
2. Insert USB flashdrive
3. Press power-on button
4. IMMEDIATELY hold down the option key and keep holding it down until the startup manager appears
5. Select the flashdrive with the pointer, hit return
6. You should boot from the flashdrive, right into the installer.

Try this and let us know how things go...
