Want to Know the Advantages and Disadvantages of Running Apache

I want to know the advantages and disadvantages of running apache web server. Also, I've been hearing that other people can access every one of my files if I open up my router to public. I just don't want to lose the important ones. Also, I have considered getting an Xserve, but I don't know about the file access either. Is the access to all files true, or can other people access just particular ones that I want them to access?
