I have a Time Capsule (500 GB, single band, 802.11n) running off a Linksys BEFSR41 (v.2) router connected to a broadband cable modem. I have extended the TC wi-fi network with an older Airport Extreme base station (802.11g). I want to maximize the range and speed of the network. Toward that end I am wondering:
Would it be better (ie improve range and/or speed) to eliminate the Linksys router and simply use the Time Capsule as the router? This would involve some loss in convenience/functionality (the TC currently serves a printer and older iMac on a different floor of the house) but that could be overcome by adding an Airport Express to the network (to serve the iMac & printer). Question is would the improvement be worth the trouble of reconfiguring plus the cost of a new AX?
Would it be better to set up the Airport Extreme base as a "roaming" device instead of an extension? As an extension the network must be configured for a Wireless Distribution System (WDS) which, if I understand correctly, can only operate in the 802.11g radio mode. As such I will not be able to take advantage of the TC's 802.11n bandwidth performance. Also, I have read that with a WDS the maximum bandwidth for 802.11g (54 Mbps) is essentially cut in half. I'm not sure if the configuration for a roaming device (which runs off its own ethernet connection from the router) requires WDS...
How much difference would it make to replace my older 802.11g AEBS with a newer 802.11n one, or perhaps an Airport Express?
