basically i have a macbook pro 2012 edition (without hdmi port), a ps3 system and a hd tv. i want to record my ps3 gameplay but dont want to buy a expensive capture card. so what i thought i could do is this :

get a hdmi splitter, hdmi to usb port (because my mac hasnt got a hdmi port) and a hdmi cable.

what i would do is have the hdmi to usb cable connected to the mac. a hdmi splitter off the ps3. then the hdmi cable to the tv. then (maybe) i can see what im doing on my tv and mac (not sure with/without software) i would then screen capture the whole thing on my mac while playing through my tv and in theory saving the video of my gameplay and (not sure if this is possible) but sound too.

is this possible or am i justing being very imaginative haha

thanks

You're being imaginative unfortunately.

A USB port has absolutely no video in capability.

Even if you did have a HDMI port they aren't capable of video in either.

You need a capture card, then that is able to display the gameplay on the screen and also comes with software to capture it.

ok, thanks very much for the quick reply and the answer!!

haha i thought i was being a bit too optimistic.

once again thanks :)
