Want to turn iphone into itouch

I found a iphone (black back 8GB) on a beach in Thailand. I spent the next 2 hours trying to find the owner with no luck. I have entered the wrong pass code to many times and now its locked. The screen says iphone is disabled connect to itunes sim locked. Of course when I connect to itunes it wont recognize it.

I would like to turn this in to an itouch. Is this possible?

Update your itunes to the latest version.
Then plug in the iphone and hit restore.
If that doesnt work and still doesnt recognize it put the iphone in dfu mode:http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1034

When I plug in the iphone, itunes opens and i get

"iTunes could not connect to the iPhone "My iPhone" because it's locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on the iPhone before it can be used with iTunes."

This is a found phone and i dont know what the passcode is.

You will have to put it in DFU mode then.
Follow the first link that I posted above to restore it in DFU mode.
