iPod touch Want to update

So right now I have an iPod touch (4th gen) running on 5.1.1. It's jailbroken
And I want to update my iPod. I know it sounds simple but the problem is that my iTunes does not match my iPod at all. So my question is can I restore my iPod, update it, then restore my iPod with a backup of my current iPod?

But restoring it will take the jailbreak away so will it work?

if you make a backup of your ipod now you can update, jailbreak and than restore your freshly made backup.

It will be a tethered jailbreak though.

Why do you want to update to 6.01? it doesn't bring anything usefull to the ipod.

I want to update becuz most of the new games run on 6.0.1 and also for some other reasons but that is the main reason
