I'm trying to figure out how I can upgrade to the Lion OS. The mac website is telling me I need to get the mac app store, but I need snow leopard, or some newer version to get the mac app store. but to get a newer version, I NEED THE MAC APP STORE. I'm stuck. Help is much appreciated!

You've answered your own question yourself :D - you need to purchase Snow Leopard to get access to the App Store, you can't download and install it from Leopard no matter what. The other solution is to buy the Lion USB drive from Apple, though that's a rather expensive alternative.

I tried finding the download place for snow leopard but I can't find it. :(

There is no download for Snow Leopard (legally). It was available on DVD only (and is no longer available from Apple). You will have to look on eBay or buy it used some other way, OR, for pretty much the same cost (or less), buy the Lion USB from Apple.

Snow Leopard is still available through the Apple Store. It will cost you $29 (plus tax) with free shipping in the US.
