Hi everyone,

Currently I have a Macbook Pro Retina 13-inch early 2015 laptop. It’s been a faithful little machine, and really it still works well, but I need more storage and I want more computing power. I’m studying to be a music producer and I’m finding as I demand more from the computer it’s struggling. I use Logic Pro X, by the way.

Bottom line is I need a new computer. I’m away from home a lot so that’s always been my reasoning for a laptop over a desktop. Problem is I’ve been reading here and elsewhere that the new macbook pros are not so faithful and if I’m going to drop so much money on a computer that’s already overpriced I want it to work and I want it to last. Should I find an alternative? Bite the bullet? Wait for a newer model?

Depends on your budget. If you're thinking of US$2,500 - US$3,500 the allegedly imminent new 16" might fit into that budget.

The other upgrades (13", 15" etc) are supposed to come around mid-2020. So if your budget is not in that range and you're not keen on waiting until mid-2020, then I'd buy something that's on the market now. The 2019 seems to have an improved keyboard, and the 2018 will apparently get a 2019 keyboard upon keyboard replacement, so I'd consider a 2019. Perhaps 2018 model if the price is right.

But if you can wait, I would wait. I have a 2015 13" and although a quad core would be nice I'm not ok gambling on the keyboard. Despite the apparent 2019 improvements.

Keep the 2015.
- A keyboard that works.
- Ports you can actually plug stuff into (without dongles).
- A more solid case.

For music production, get either an iMac 27" or a 2018 Mini (well-equipped).

The ports on the 2015 model are showing their age, no USB C with TB3 support etc.

The OP is saying that he is away from home a lot, so that rules out iMac and Mini.

If you urgently want it now, go for the 2019 model or wait until next year and get the latest processors etc.
