want to watch .avi file, not sure if perian is working.

hi, new to mac, and am having trouble watching an .avi file in quicktime. downloaded xvid, etc. including perian. i'm not sure if perian is working because when i look in the quicktime folder there doesn't seem to be any new codecs or anything in there that perian should have downloaded. is it possible that my antivirus is blocking perian from updating? thanks for your help.

IMO antivirus should not block perian, if in doubt you can check you anti-virus settings and see if it's blocked, and BTW you're on a mac.. you don't need an anti-virus protection..
