want upgrade

I want to upgrade from El Capitan to a later OS. I get a drop down saying my laptop can't be upgraded to the next level. What do I need to do to make this happen?

It would help if you told us what year your MacBook was made.

IF Apple says that El Cap "is as far as you can go", you can't go further without 3rd-party hacks.

Whether or not you wish to do that is up to you.
