I just picked my 2007 MBP (2.1 GHZ) apart in order to change the HD (bought a Seagate 7200.3 320 GB) and thought I would give it a go with removing the darn Superdrive to see how the weight reduction would actually improve.

To sum up my quick separation:
It weighs precisely 144 grams and is probably one of the lightest items inside the MBPs as it is. This finally concludes and ruins my idea of removing the superdrive in order to benefit from lesser weight. The loss of the drive made it feel less stable (since some weight was removed from only the right side.

The low-down for all you dreaming of buying a new MB or MBP and getting "almost" a MBA: don't bother and remove it only to make room for a second hard drive or something like that. It's just not worth it.
