I've been wanting that 3.06 iMac (mostly due to the 8800) since the day it was announced, unfortunately I'd have to sell my macbook to be able to afford it and then I'd have no portable computer, so I would have to wait anyways. Now I just have a reason besides money
Did you notice they're not quite comparing 's to 's? Namely, that the iMac 8800 GS was loaded with 10.5.2? Even the Mac Pro on the older OS suffered from it.

no no, the whole point was to compare 10.5.2 to 10.5.3. They had the imac w/ 8800 run the tests with each version of the OS.
The poor core image performance of the 8800 has been well documented. What this article shows, in fact, is an excellent improvement for the 8800 with 10.5.3.
So this is *good* news for 8800 buyers. What this means is that you now get core image performance that is very close to that of the 2600 - and, of course, you still have vastly superior gaming performance.
