I was being stupid with a hairdryer and I wanted to see if I aimed it at my computer, the temperature sensor in iStat would spike. It didn't spike, and unfortunately, the F key warped and popped off the mechanism. The T key has a little bit of a misshapen feel to it, but it's not nearly as severe as the F key. There's no way that the F key can fit back onto the keyboard, so I grabbed the F key off of a broken MacBook topcase I have. It only fit upside down, due to a difference in how the button mechanism clips to the keycap. What are my options for a new key?

The only thing that I can think of would be to take it into the apple store and see if they happen to have key replacements available. Hopefully you don't have to replace the entire keyboard, that would be an unnecessary pain...

As a note, it's probably not wise to put a hairdryer right next to the computer :p

There's nothing electronically or mechanically wrong with the keyboard, so I'll do anything I can to avoid that. I'll just pop off the keys and tell them that the keys fell off to avoid them accusing me of accidental damage. Sure it's accidental damage, but I don't want them voiding my warranty for $8 damage at most (that's about what keys go for on ebay, iirc).

So buy the stupid keys on Ebay. You answered your own question. Why go through the hassle of taking it to Apple and lying about it? This is one of the most ridiculous things I've heard on this forum. Suck it up and buy new keys since you caused the damage yourself.

I've had random individual keyboard keys replaced numerous times over the years at the Apple Store, usually just takes them a couple minutes and they send me on my way without any trouble.
