I have been on a galaxy S8 for months and while i think its the best phone ever made in terms of hard ware, I wenty back to my iphone 7 and i watch combo for a few weeks and im in love with iOS all over again. So now im tempted to get the iphone x. i played with it in a t mobile store for a few minutes and liked what i saw.

but me being OCD pixel peeper/benchmark fiend/review reader when it comes to buying any tech i went and watched a lot of videos related to the iphone x. NEVER in my life have I ever seen so many negative videos on youtube on any phone like this with the iphone x. literally hundreds of videos with tons of views all similarly titled like "WHY I RETURNED MY iPHONE X :( :(" or "72+ hours with the iphone x - IM RETURNING IT! :(".
and they all talk about gestures being horrible and not being able to get used to the notch. and of course the usual dumb stuff like " i cant move the icons wherever i want" no **** thats been a thing sincce iphone 1.

anyway, is the phone really that bad? or is there some sort of conspiracy iphone x hate train trend every you tuber is hopping on? why do people hate this phone so much. and everyone i know is telling me to just get the 8, "iphone x sucks because of the notch". but i want OLED and big screen! haha

Never trust only YouTube videos most of them have an pre mediated agenda.

iPhone X is no different then any other new electronic there will be problems it’s just not widespread though. And a bunch of haters also making reassurance videos to convince them they don’t want the X don’t help either.

So you don't use your s8 anymore? If not why?

I am deciding between an s8 and an X. I considered the s8 because its a new experience, the price, and the design. I am considering an X because it has the best camera and iOS.

Use what works best for you and don't base it on videos you see on youtube. Plus, some places have an extended return window for holiday shopping. Verizon is to 1/15 (USA).

Not sure why you think YouTube is the best place to get objective opions about phones considering anyone can post a review regardless of qualifications. iPhone X has been selling extremely well, in Phoenix if you don’t reserve a phone by 8am they are all gone well before noon. If you like your Samsung so much, why switch?

Clickbait.

Full disclosure: I may return my X. But 99% of the complaints are nonsense. For example the "notch." Yes, there are some games and apps where the notch intrudes. In most cases, it does not, or if it does it's no problem in any way. How is the notch with a well-designed app worse than a full-width bezel?

This is a beautifully designed and made piece of tech hardware that's a pleasure to use. The display and cameras are almost to die for. Although I think some of the UI/UX could be improved, for a first gen effort it's really outstanding. With all my prior phones, I was always aware that I was using a device. For the first time, it's almost like the device isn't there at all - I'm just doing things directly, without a device that needs manipulation between me and what I want to do. Hard to explain. Very cool.

dont get me wrong, the S8 is one of the most amazing phones ive ever used. The display and form factor are stunning. everything about the phone is amazing as phones go. My main issue is just with android and its a preference thing, its not the S8's fault whatsoever. I just really like the simplicity, fluidity, and speed of iOS. and i think apple watch integration is far superior to anything i have experienced with android wear. If you like android all around then for sure get the s8 ITS AMAZING. I am still going to keep it for when i feel like going back to android because as far as android i think its the best option out there in terms of features and price ( it dropped since launch). But for now iOS is drawing me back in with its amazing optimization and just bare minimals it does so well.

I love the S8 as a phone i just prefer iOS right now

I understand the caution you are using before buying. One thing I can tell you is that MOST of those videos are clickbait and monetary driven. It's simple: negative marks get the most clicks. I'm specifically talking about android fans and unboxtherapy (In which I read is pissed that Apple didn't send him a review unit like the other YouTubers). Before watching any of those videos, understand that they ALL (sans a few like DetroitBorg) have a bias. For all negative ones, there are positive ones as well (see iJustine, Marques Brownlee, Jonathan Morrison, exc.). You'll see higher numbers on the negative videos because that is where all android fans go to voice their disdain for Apple and "iSheep".

Now with that being said, I have had every iPhone (sans i7) you could possibly imagine. The honeymoon phase usually lasts a week (at most) before I realize it's just another phone..this iPhone X is different. I am continuously impressed and can't stop using it. It really is the biggest change this phone has EVER had since the original.

If you want real reviews, look at the feedback on social media and consumer reviews - they are overwhelmingly positive. Giving any YouTuber who uses a thumbnail with their head down, holding the iPhone X, with bold text saying "Worst Device Ever" automatically proves what kind of audience they are aiming for. I've been watching unboxing/review for years and never stray from my usual favorites. I'm browsing now and notice that these negative ones are notoriously biased and so CLEARLY clickbait (it's actually quite funny). Best thing to do is to stick to people who simply just review the product (DetroitBorg).

Your new favorites:
-I can only upload 5 links but these are just a few Apple fans who genuinely keep it positive.

If you seek out the negative reviews, you will definitely find them. It's all about the money. Absolutely no reviewer on YouTube is looking out for your best interest. They have their audience and cater to that audience.

Honestly with all of the reading and watching I’ve been doing, I’ve found this to be the most resoundingly approved iPhone in recent memory.

Sometimes I think that's part of the problem, everybody reads too much into the media, and the media wants to create controversy aside from all the good things with the iPhone X. Too many times others lose focus on their own views with iPhone X and they let everybody else's views influence them.

You are confusing some of that negativity with honesty.

So a 10th anniversary of something has to be perfect? Immune to constructive criticism? Even the TAM was criticized.

Many are saying it's the best iPhone ever made but it's NOT the best phone for them. Best similar to beauty is subjective to people. This is YouTube owned by Google.

I resisted, since it IS expensive and I just bought the 7+ shortly after it's launch. But I finally decided I wanted something smaller than the +. I stopped reaching for the home button faster than I expected. The only difficulty I've had was figuring out how to power down, which was necessary to do my port.

My backup phone is an Android, so I'm somewhat familiar with that. Though I've not used a flagship android device.

  • Buy one
  • Form your _own_ opinion
  • Return if not satisfied

This. Don’t let anyone persuade you. Use it for yourself and if you don’t like it return it.

And again. More than any recent Apple product, I simply don't think you can talk about this without trying it. Well...obviously you can, but it's just the equivalent of passing gas. This phone is so different, both as hardware and in terms of its UI and the overall UX, that it has to be used before you can have any sort of sensible opinion, and I don't mean just fondled and stroked for a few minutes in a store. You need to take it home and use it like you own it. Fortunately, Apple's holiday return period is in effect, so you can try it until January 8, 2018 and still return it.

It’s the best iPhone I ever owned. And I don’t have any problems with pointing out the negative

Yes. As I just said elsewhere, it isn't perfect, but it is still awesome.

Like a Star Wars film and McDonald's, iPhones are critic-proof.

The Force Awakens is a glorified A New Hope with less interesting characters and it made $2B worldwide. The Phantom Menace is considered the worst SW and has made the 3rd most for the franchise. The Last Jedi could be worse than TFA and it still won't flop with enough fanboys watching it on Day 1.

Go to any McDonald's in the world and the experience is generally the same. The menu is the same. The taste is the same. That's Apple products. Consistent experience. A McDonald's in Beverly Hills or Compton will taste the same.

Reviews for the Compton franchise could have poor reviews because of the place and employees but guess what? People will still be lining up for its food because the food taste the same as the one in Beverly Hills.

Why are you worried of reviewers? The X sold 15M so far and counting. It sold 6M in the week of Black Friday. Critic-proof like Star Wars and McDonald's. Apple is the only iOS OEM there is. It's a minimum of 50M-70M sold every year whether reviewed good or bad.

You will have to try and see for yourself. Personally, I'm split on it. I prefer the iPhone 8 Plus aspect ratio and touch ID. For me, I would like an iPhone 8 Plus with slimmer side bezels and no forehead and maintain touch ID. I don't really like the gestures, control center launched differently depending on device and the longer time it takes to close background apps. There are enough compromises, I cannot let go of my 7 Plus.

People are more likely to be vocal on the internet when they have something negative to say.

The iPhone X is fantastic. Best phone I’ve ever used, by far. The “notch” is a non-issue when you’re actually using the phone. The iPhone 8/7/6 screens feel significantly smaller every time I go back and use one for a few minutes. And the OLED screen is significantly better-looking than the LCDs. Whenever I go back to my iPad, or a previous iPhone, they just look and feel so old.

It seems like most people returning it are coming from the 7+ or 8+, and they just can’t get used to the smaller form factor. After holding my sister’s 7+ for a good 10-15 minutes or so, looking through pictures and videos of my niece, I immediately picked up my iPhone X and it did feel noticeably smaller in my hand. But I’ve always preferred the smaller-sized phones so it’s perfect for me. The Plus models are just too big, in my opinion.

Other people returning the X seem to just have bad luck, and/or didn’t want to like it in the first place.

Price is also a deterrent, but at $999 it’s only $50 more than the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, which no one on the whole damn internet ever seems to mention. That one I just don’t understand.

You won’t know if you’ll like the iPhone X until you try it yourself. I actually thought I’d hate it, due to the notch and the removal of Touch ID... but I ended up loving it immediately out of the box. Like I said, it’s now my favorite phone I’ve ever used, by far.

You don't get views if you don't hate the iPhone on YouTube. This is how the world works.

You're correct. And that's exactly how MacRumors works as well. They need views/clicks to survive and have controversial headlines about the iPhone X to gain clicks and viewer ratings. Same thing applies to YouTube with Clickbait thumbnails for those to view and watch the videos to increase the views.

Glad to hear you pulled the trigger. I'm a very happy iPhone X owner. You might be too.

I will acknowledge there are people who don't like or don't prefer the X due to specific, legitimate reasons, generally having to do with design changes they just aren't comfortable with. For the most part, it's the reduction in screen width over the Plus, or the change from the home button to gestures. A few people have unfortunately gone through several units with quality problems (but I don't think that is common - we bought two in my home that are perfect).

The bottom line is, a LOT of people love the X. You might be one of them, so why not find out first-hand?

Let us know how it goes.

So true. There's definitely more of a complete experience that really requires a few days hands on to understand (vs. just reading about individual features in a vacuum).

Give it a good solid 2 days - you also have the advantage of way more apps being updated since I got mine on 11/3 :)
