This has to be one of the weirdest changes I've seen from Apple in awhile. I remember Accidental Tech Podcast mentioning this but I can't recall what the reasoning was for why they did this. No longer is my device "Name's iPhone" it's just iPhone (2).

My question is, what happens when everyone upgrades and starts using this scheme? How will you select the right iPhone to tether when there are a bunch of iPhone (2) in the wifi menu?

and does anyone know if there's a way to change this? I can't seem to find anything.

Also can change it in Finder/iTunes when plugged into computer (click on item in side bar, click on name in main window).

And that is where I've generally seen a phone/iPad/Watch get re-named. For example, old phone was called "Joes Phone", get new phone, setup from old phone, now have two "Joes Phone" so second becomes "Joes Phone 2". Setups as new/ish situations, basically/kinda.

I just upgraded (IMO downgraded) to iOS 16.2 from iOS 15 and the name of my phone didn’t change from what it was.

Mine had my name so it never changed it, but it seems to be an issue with the generic names. My ATVs and or Homepods got the (2) out of nowhere one time, and it wouldn't let me remove it. I just added LR or BR to the beginning and took off the (2), and they were fine then

That happens when there is more than one iPhone named "iPhone" connected to a Wi-Fi network; they get numbered sequentially.

I rode in the car with my friend the other day; works for a very large tech firm. His iPhone was named "iPhone (1382)".

Pick an unique name and you won't see that happen again.

Yup.

As @compwiz1202 does, I too have named my devices something unique. "iPhone_ModelMyInitials", "iPad_same". So current iPhone is an SE 2020: "iPhone_SEFL". Still, temporarily, run into (2) problem when setting up new, but easily fixable as @Apple_Robert points out.

Have a RS, RS (refurbished), !2 mini and 13 mini. All termed as "iPhone RS"

Mine says iPhone 13 Pro Max(2) in bold. Underneath it in smaller letters and not bold it says This iPhone 14 Pro Max.

This happens to me in my own car I bought used. The last person who had the car must have had an iPhone because every time I get in and connect my phone via Bluetooth to the car’s hands free system, it changes the name of my iPhone to iPhone (2). If I have Bluetooth off and it doesn’t connect for hands free, the name stays as iPhone.

I even went in and deleted the stored iPhone (and two others on it) from the stereo head unit Bluetooth list but it still renames my phone to iPhone (2). Don’t know what else to try. Not a huge deal but frustrating when air dropping/using the hotspot as it causes me to do a double take and I think I am connecting to someone else’s device.
