never having seen an X or Xs/XsMax in person, I thought the screen was filled edge to edge, top to bottom. There is still a black bezel around the edges. Is this the way it should be?
 
it's not fully edge to edge if you're thinking like the samsung galaxy edge.

You really don't want it fully to the edge. I had one of those Samsung phones and it's so easy to accidentally activate the screen/scroll etc.

I actually prefer the iPhone style of display vs Samsung. Reasons are you won’t accidentally press or move screens but more importantly, more options and cheaper alternatives for glass screen protectors. My wife has a s9+ and all the screen protectors eventually peels off because the side’s adhesive usually sucks

Yeah I know what you mean, the side bezels are barely any smaller than the IP8
I guess apple had a different definition of edge to edge
