Was it possible to reserve an iPhone 4/g with a contract?

I couldn't see that option on the apple website. Did anybody manage to reserve a phone without signing up for a contract?
 
You don't actually pay for the reserved phone until you go to the store to pick it up. That's when you will have to renew your contract.
