Was the Iphone 5 being tested well before the 4S?

All the rumours point to prototypes of the Iphone 5 around in summer 2011 before the 4S is right.

So is that true? I take it things like panorama mode hidden in IOS5 point to that?

The design will have been finalised, or as good as finalised.

Theres also material types, machining techniques, costs etc to consider.

I'm sure they already have a pretty good idea of what their next 2 or 3 phones look like.

Yea I'd imagine they're in the process of testing the 5S (which will be the next) and then building blueprints for a redesign (iPhone 6 or w/e it will be called)

Of the thousands of details in each phone, you can be sure many of them were being tossed around or being tested a year or two ago. These things don't just get dreamed up, developed, and produced inside of a few months. Just does not happen.
