No surprise really when you see how badly it derailed around that curve.
It’s good to see railroads working on getting PTC in place but it’s a slow process. This is two major Amtrak incidents in a row that probably wouldn’t have happened with PTC. I’ll be interested to see how this one happened/why they were speeding.

This new line has PTC installed but not yet activated.
 
I made several Amtrak trips to Portland and other parts of Oregon in the past year, and am pretty sure I saw that particular Cascades train (parked at a station). So, when I saw the news about this derailment, it felt surreal. I also felt lucky.

I really hope this doesn't damage Amtrak's reputation and/or rail travel too much, because I think rail is the most fun way to travel. It would be a shame if that happened :(
