Wasn't able to access files on shared drive though now I can

I use my MBP to access files on my iMac Pro over the network, and last night when I tried it displayed my folders though they all had little minus signs in the lower corner and I wasn't able to open any folders because I was told I didnt have permission. I just tried again and it worked. Why did it do this?
