I had a Apple Watch 1 before but sold it. Want to get one for fitness now that they have GPS.

For fitness (running), is it better to get a 3 on sale?

Depends on how serious a runner you are, there's some new metrics concerning pace, and goals on the new watch, but I also believe they are on the new WatchOS5 that will be available for the Series 3. Depends on a) How much money you have to spend, and b) do you like the newest, (and therefore the fastest) device. Looking at new, there's not a lot of price difference between S3 and S4. I think I'd opt for the S4.

for the larger size base model 260 (previous sale) vs 430.

3 is great, if you are really serious about running metrics get a Garmin, but I bought a 3 to try out last December and never looked back, so easy with airpods running with music. Counts laps in the pool, open water swim tracking is excellent. HR is fine for all day tracking, for sports tracking it’s a bit hit and miss depending on what you’re doing and conditions but if you are serious about this then just get a chest strap.
