Wrist detection is on and Watch is lying on the table. Still the health app shows heart rate measurements for that period.
iOS 13.2.3; watch os 6.1.

I tried this. The watch is getting readings from something, but it is all over the place. One minute is 30 and the next it is 107. I think it is confused because we are trying to get it to detect a heart beat when there is none. Is it ok? Sure it is. If you are getting wacky readings while wearing the watch then that would be a problem.

My idea is Watch should not read heart rate if not on wrist.

I agree with this. What if a few months from now, you need to go back and see your heart rate for a certain period. Who’s gonna remember if they were wearing it at that time or not and if they’re looking at their own heart rate and not the table’s?

This was my thinking as well. If you want the watch to accurately show your heart rate over time, this isn't good.

If it only happens when you purposely try to make it happen, though, and the watch doesn't just start measuring heart rate on its own when it's off your wrist, I don't think it would be a problem.

You have to put your watch on a table, unlock the watch, and purposefully open the heart rate monitor.

I have noticed this has been happening with my watch recently when staying away from home a couple of times and placing the watch off charger, locked and on a bedside table.

Yesterday morning I noticed readings between 7am and 9am up to around 156bpm - the thing is, I didn’t put the watch on until 9:15 when I left the hotel room for breakfast. I noted the time because breakfast finished at 10am and I distinctly remember putting my watch on at 9:15 just before leaving and to add, I was actually still sleeping at 7am when the watch started recording the readings - the watch was also locked at that time.

The same also happened a few weekends prior again, when away from home and the watch was locked and resting on a bedside table. I though it was odd and then checked the times - again, I was sleeping at the time the watch was taking readings.

I had the same thing when I had the watch off and the sensor touching the silikone strap. Nice readings between 85 and 90 bpm. Weird.

No, a reset won’t help. Some Smartwatches do show this behavior, have witnessed it on my Huawei before. Only happens when the heart rate sensor thinks it detects something, maybe the way certain bands reflect the light or so?

Original post about series 5 monitoring heart rates. Sorry if I didn't restrict my reply to lying on a table, give me a break.
I got the monitoring patch after I showed my Cardiologist my Cardiogram charts. I had some minor issues, but monitor basically confirmed what Cardiogram showed. Self diagnosis isn't alway good, but I wanted to be sure. Older brother was having problem with A-fib, and I wanted to be sure. If posting my chart bothers you, too bad.

What are you talking about? This is nothing to do with genuine heart readings, he was asking why his watch was still supposedly reading his heart when placed on the table.

I just tested and your right...the watch thinks my desk has a heart rate...a little erratic but, it’s alive! lol

Apple is just expressing the Eastern mystical idea that all things have consciousness.
