Watch downloaded subtitles with a DVD without ripping the DVD?

I am looking for a way or an application to watch a downloaded subtitle file with a commercial DVD without copying the DVD (just while playing it). All the answers I've seen involve ripping the DVD first. Is it possible?

It's definitely possible. Try this:

It's not very sophisticated, but it does run independent of any video files
