Folks, can someone explain to me how this will work (if we know yet)...

I fully understand that watch has no GPS and relies on my phone (5S), so...

I keep my GPS off at present because I don't like to watch my phone battery visibly discharge before my very eyes. One of the features I find appealing about the watch is the whole fitness/activity tracking stuff, so... If I want to turn my GPS ON for an activity and record that data, do I have to pull my phone out and enable GPS/location there somehow or can that be done directly from the watch; or is it using something clever to recognize the start of 'active calories' and turning it on automatically?

Point being... I don't want GPS running all day as my phone will be dead by lunchtime. It might sound trivial to take the phone out and turn on the GPS but my particular problem occurs because I am forgetful and I ride a giant 4 year old Chestnut mare (horse). I want to log my rides but frequently forget to 'turn on' before I get on her back... Once ON her, taking ones hands off the controls is not advisable unless a high speed trip to the nearest horizon is in my plans...

How is it gonna work?

OR: am I misunderstanding the whole GPS drain issue? I just know when I use maps or anything... it visibly tanks my battery...
