Watch on WiFi?

The watch is supposed to join the WiFi network that the phone is on, correct? I'm not seeing a watch showing up on my router with an easy name like you see with iPhones and iPads. There are a couple of random IPs with no name, but I'm wondering if some of the problems people are having (slow / no music synch, etc) are because the phone isn't on WiFi and its transferring over Bluetooth (which isn't very fast).
