Just had my first issue with my Series 3 since I purchased it years ago.

I attempted to update the watch OS, but was prompted to update to latest iOS first. Phone is now at 14.5.1.

However, the update there and error saying I didn’t have enough memory on watch. Not sure how as I don’t really have anything installed on it. Anyway, without allowing me to look into it, the watch rebooted to factory to free up space. It ran at least one update, but then I ran into a “Checking for software update failed because you are not connected to the internet.”

Of course I am connected to the internet…

Tried multiple different things to no avail. After chatting with Apple support they’re having me sent it in for the repair shop to manually force the update. Thanks fully free, otherwise I’d be very upset. Can’t say I ever honestly recall a product getting bricked from a software update that you can’t fully reset.

I assume in the interim I can’t use my phone to track activity or workouts?

With the size of recent Watch OS versions, most series 3 watches don't have enough free space to do the update.

There are two methods
1. start the upgrade from the watch directly
2. unpair the watch, which wipes it, then upgrade and then restore from the backup.

Both of these methods are documented on this page
