In they keynote, it was mentioned that Watch OS5, allowed third party app background audio play. Is this only through AirPods, or has Apple reintroduced the ability to listen through the Watches own speaker?

Genuinely interested. I used to listen to podcasts on the watch speaker, before Apple removed the ability to do so.

Ah, I think I understand the significance of the OS5 reference now (podcasts being new to OS5). I'm guessing it was probably an omission and they wouldn't want general audio to go to the speaker of the Watch for power consumption reasons so they turned it off.

I had a chance to let the music go off via watch speaker when using one of the recent watch betas. I was in the music app, tapped the "shuffle all", and all of a sudden sound came out of speaker. I paused the music, but never got another chance to reproduce that glitch again. Kinda feel wasted, cause that would be a perfect chance to see how's the speaker performance when playing music.

Think you nailed it. It’s there just for curiosity hence Apple likely won’t give us the ability. I don’t even use iPhone speaker for music. It’s either earphone or airplay speakers.
