I have a S6 44mm and noticed numbers showing during a workout are considerably smaller. I only have 3 metrics showing, time, active cal and heart rate.
Anyone else?

I just did a workout and did not notice any change in the font size (S4, 44 mm). However, I did note that the function whereby you could use the digital crown to highlight your metric of choice no longer works. (For example, I used to turn the digital crown to highlight active calories - now turning the digital crown just causes the to scroll off to show you your activity rings; the actual metrics show time elapsed in yellow and everything else stays in white – which makes it really hard to distinguish between the metrics when you are looking quickly in the middle of a work out.)

Back to your question - my watch shows the normal expected four metrics. Is there a way to show fewer?

Notice how it only uses half the screen. Before update used all of screen.

You can customize. I have 5 metrics showing while doing cycling however these are small as well.
I used only 3 metrics so I could see bigger fonts and while using bigger space.

I’m pretty sure that they did decrease the font size, and I think they bolded it. I think I prefer the font in Workout in WatchOS 8. I wouldn’t trade the new features in WatchOS 9 for it though!

I miss those highlight also. I like more screens for metrics, but would be great if I can highlight specific matric on each screen.

Is it possible to configure what metrics are displayed on the screens? Pretty sure it used to be possible but can’t find the option now…

Go to the workout you desire in the app. Look for 3 small dots in the upper right corner.
Tab then you can customize.

On a side note. I really hope the Ultra will be able to take advantage of the full screen with larger fonts.

I’m having this problem too, used to be a ‘workout view’ but it is gone

Perfect, thanks. I thought it could also be done on the phone, which is easier, but this will do for now

Just rang up Apple. Turns out ‘workout view’ has been left out in error. He’s made a note and asked for me to send feedback, so the more people that do I guess the quicker it gets resolved
CORRECTION:- the Apple guy just emailed me this

I’ve also requested larger digits on the metric screen, accessibility font size has no bearing on it, some people’s eyesight will welcome this.

Same here.
I’ve noticed some of the Watch complications have gotten smaller also. Another thread about that here. I have the heart widget and they added a graph but made the number smaller.
I guess Apple engineers are all under 25 with perfect eyesight

This is absolutely ridiculous. How did the update go backward in its functionality? It’s driving me crazy. The font is SO MUCH SMALLER and you cannot use the crown to scroll and highlight what you want to focus on whenever you look at your watch during a workout. This needs to be changed ASAP. What a stupid update. Wish I would have known it did this or I would have never updated. Apple, be better than this and fix the stupid problem.

Not sure I am seeing what you are seeing

That screen has 5 rows so it takes up the whole screen. If you did a strength training workout it only has 4 and it used to take up the whole screen but now it doesn’t. Also, you can no longer use the crown on the side to scroll between each row to highlight (the color would be red) a certain section you would want to focus on. You’re just stuck with the highlight being yellow on the top row.

Highlighting a specific metric no longer seems possible, or am I wrong? You used to be able to switch between time, heart rate, pace, etc., with the knob, but now that rotates the screens. Is there anything way to change the metric that is highlighted in it's color???

And another issue that I'll look for in forums is the average pace. I'll typically go out for a run of four miles and every time the watch hits a mile it calls it a split with a time of X, and it always lists an average pace of X. But that isn't my average. First mile at 10 minutes, second at 9, third at 8... It just always states my average pace at that mile pace (the watch face itself after getting off the split screen properly displays average pace).

This os update is extremely frustrating to say the least (as a runner).

You can set each X miles for this message. For me, it counts average pace for that mile not all miles before it.

For me (as runner) is the best update ever. It calculates current pace much faster than watchOS 8, finally fixed GPS inaccuracy (also introduced in watchOS 8) and you can see watts and other new matrics.
