Ok, so the Sapphire screen on my watch cracked with an accidental impact on a door. Since them I have done some research on weather Glass of Sapphire is actually more durable. I just wanted to share what I have found so far. Is Sapphire really better? I doubt that now…

There are three issues here:

SCRATCH REISISTANCE, In this case Sapphire is the clear will. This one is really easy to prove with scientific measurements.

BRITTLENESS and CRACKS, I’m calling this one an unknown for now. Sapphire is technically stronger but that might mean brittle as well. My experience indicates this could be true. Unfortunately, empirical scientific testing is hard to come by.

POTENTIAL FOR UNSEEN MANUFACTURING DEFECTS, Glass is the clear winner in this dimension that no one seems to ever discuss. Glass is easy to manufacture error free in large quantities. Sapphire is very difficult to manufacture and it could be extra brittle if not done exactly right. For a horror story about how difficult Sapphire manufacturing is just Google “Apple GT Advanced”. This is an Apple supplier that went bankrupt over Sapphire manufacturing problem.

Here are the 2 best links I have found. Please share any links you find on this topic.
