doesn't the element of moderation within this forum strike people as a little uncivilised? whatever happened to free speech and why, on a public forum are we being told what we can and cannot read? almost like being dictated to maybe.

It's not truly a "public" forum, and there is no "right to freedom of speech" here. We tend to be relatively loose but don't, for example, allow direct or indirect insults.

I don't know how English Free Speech laws work, but you clearly don't understand how American ones do. ;)

What's getting deleted that has you so bothered? I seem to manage to say whatever I want, and I hardly ever get anything deleted.

And who are you, anyway? ;)

1. The forum may be open to the public, but it is owned by a private individual.

2. Free speech only pertains to law and government (in the US, I'm guess the UK is the same). When on private property, the owners can curtail your speech as they see fit.

3. I think our mods are pretty good on what stays and what goes.

If these rules aren't for you, then no one is making you stay.

Of course, not all posts are ever seen by a moderator, which is why we have the Report Bad Post (
report.gif
) link on every post.

And, even when posts are reported or seen by a moderator, we're all individuals with slightly different approaches, and we are not going to be 100% consistent, but we do try to be fair.

Having your post edited is not being thrown into a jail cell for 25 years while being starved and beaten. That is what happens to people who speak out in countries with no free speech laws. If you really want to exercise your free speech, go outside, without a laptop, and talk to somebody. Or get a megaphone and make a speech. Or run for office. Macrumors, while admitedly awesome, is not a venue in which to exercise free speech. It would degenerate quite quickly without mods deleting the occasional post. Plus our mods are cool. For the most part. ;)

It would be cool if people started making veiled references to certain mods in this thread like some other thread that came up recently... but then, it would be cool if the MR servers switched over to PhoenixOS, too...

This is the way I feel when one of my posts is edited by a mod. ;) :D

Yes, it most certainly would degenerate quite quickly without the needed assistance of mods and concerned individuals who flag inappropriate threads/posts.

That they are! :)

I don't know if this will get deleted but the wasteland is a good bet.

I'd say the "element of moderation" keeps things civilized.

It may find its way to Wasteland. But in the meantime the fact that it's allowed to be discussed, openly, is yet another tribute to the quality of the moderation factor.

Would you rather...

1. Look at porn?
2. Read a dirty book?

2. Study the meaning of "pugnacious"?

2. Find fault with your spouse?

1. Post a rebuttal with your comments?
2. Flee the scene of a hit and run?
