When I try and play an .avi file, it plays in Divx or my selected player for like a half a second, and then quits. If i fast forward, it says I need codec 8192 but I already have it installed.

I'm using Nice Player, FLV, Divx, and Quicktime. It seriously plays for half a second, then stops.

What Mac OS X version do you use?
What about VLC Player or Movist? I use those two and only have Perian installed for some files to be able to play back in QT Player. I never had the Divx codec installed.

In order to find out, what may be wrong with your video, if VLC or Movist don't play it back, you can use the following three applications to analyse a sample video file.
When done, you can use the "Report" (VideoSpec) and "Export" (Media Inspector) button to export a report,
attachable to your next post via the

button.
In MediaInfo you have to go to the Menu Bar, select View > Text and copy the text via CMD+A > CMD+C and paste it via CMD+V into your next post.

Get VLC - this is the best player.

Err, Yes, VLC i have that. lol
