A theoretical scenario here. I've got some Apple product (say, a Mini) that has on its hard drive a typical 700 MB rip of a 2 hour movie. It's an AVI file, uses a DivX codec.

How do I watch this on a TV? Say, if I had a 50" HDTV or something.

Theoretically, if your TV had a VGA port (which some do), then I think you could use your hypothetical HDTV as a monitor for your theoretical Mini and watch it that way.

Also, if, say, you had a product that would write viewable DVDs of AVI movies, such as Toast, then it may be possible to write this movie onto a hypothetical DVD to play in a DVD player that may or may not actually be connected to this potentially non-existent television.

Most if not all current Macs can output to TV, does your HDTV have DVI input if so just plug the Mac mini in and you're ready to go. If you want a network based solution check out El Gato's EyeHome streaming media server.
