Watching DVDs on 27" iMac

Hi, I'm relatively new to the Mac, having switched from a Windows laptop and having tried to watch a commercial DVD, the picture quality isn't great (due to the really high resolution).

Is there any way to improve the quality by changing any of VLC's settings? Should I turn deinterlace 'on' or 'automatic'?

Remember that the resolution of standard dvds is only 720x576/480 so if you're on full screen with your Mac at it's max resolution, it's never going to look great.
