iPad Pro Watching video on an external monitor

I have an HDMI adapter for my iPad Pro, and I would like to use it to output video on to my TV while I do other things on my iPad. As it stands now, if I exit the video app, then the video stops playing on the TV. The best I can do is split screen, with the Videos app taking up half the screen.

Does anyone have a better solution?
