Apple today provided the first beta of the upcoming watchOS 10 update to public beta testers, allowing the general public to try out the new Apple Watch software ahead of its fall launch.

watchOS 10 can be downloaded after upgrading your iPhone to the public beta version of iOS 17 and after signing up on Apple's beta software website. With those criteria fulfilled, you can open up the Watch app on iPhone, go to General, select Software Update, and choose the watchOS 10 Public Beta option under Beta Updates.

With watchOS 10, Apple is making a major update to the Apple Watch interface with a focus on widgets. The Smart Stack, accessible with a turn of the Digital Crown, displays the information that you need most. What's available changes throughout the day and as the Apple Watch learns your usage habits.

Apple has updated almost all of the built-in apps with an information-forward design that allows for quicker interactions. Weather, Maps, Home, Messages, Activity, Heart Rate, Stocks, and more have all been overhauled.

There are two new watch faces, including Palette and Snoopy. Snoopy features characters from the popular Peanuts cartoon, with the animations changing throughout the day. Palette shows the time in a variety of overlapping colors.

The Maps app has a topography view that shows elevation information, contour lines, hill shading, and points of interest to make it more useful on hikes and when out and about, and for cyclists, there are new advanced metrics, views, and experiences that work through a connection to Bluetooth-enabled cycling accessories.

The Mindfulness app has a new feature for logging moods and emotions, Group FaceTime audio calls are now supported, and NameDrop allows you to quickly exchange contact information with somebody just by holding your Apple Watch near someone's iPhone.

Are public betas generally considered stable nowadays? I haven't ran one since iOS 11 I believe, and it felt a bit buggy.

WatchOS 10 looks too cool to pass up. Need me some new faces!

If it's the same build version as the dev beta, I recommend against installing the public beta. My battery on my Ultra gets from 100% to 0 in less than a day.

If I could install this without having to also upgrade my iPhone to ios17 I’d be in, have 3 AWs and 1 on a beta would be cool. But only have 1 iPhone and no way will i put a beta on that…

I would recommend an unpair/repair - my Ultra goes from 6:30am until 11pm and I still average around 60% battery; this is down from around 65-70% with watchOS 9.

I did it several times. Nothing changed. I’m not wearing the watch anymore so I don’t f up the battery

Just my experience (on the newest dev beta on a Series 7 45mm) I've had a few quirky bugs. Mainly the weather complication bug, doesn't happen very often. Today I had a bug with my activity ring complication where it showed 7 hours of standing when I actually had 10.

However, the most annoying one is that when I put it on the charger it only charges up like 4-5% and will stop. I have to restart the watch and place it back on the charger to get it to charge 100%. This doesn't happen every time, but its happened enough that I always restart before charging now. This seems to only be present on the "fast charger" with the newer model apple watches. I was on vacation last week and did not have the issue with the original apple watch charger.

Is that otherwise called “it drains three times as fast”… TWS

You need to look at what you have running. My Ultra uses optimised charging (charges to 79%) and consumed about 30% per day. Staggering battery life.

Every year they do this. They announce more faces in the fall when they announce new watches.
they're just always kinda meh. would be nice to get some really nice sharp looking ones like I'm sure third parties would develop if given the chance. most of what we have either seems cartoony or almost too utilitarian. I usually make my own as best I can with photo faces but it would be nice to have more font options to the ability to move the complications around
