So I downloaded the watchOS beta about a month ago. I really enjoy most of it, but the new notifications while the wrist is down suck. Those use to just show you what app you were getting a notification, like messages would just show the contact picture. Once you lifted your wrist, it would then show the details. Now even with the wrist down, it shows details of the notifications. Does anything know how to turn this off? I see a setting for tap to show details, but that is not a fix. I don’t want to tap my watch every time I want to get a notification details. Isn’t that the point of the watch to just glance and see the notification?

Would love to hear if anyone else is having this issue. Also I have always on display.

Strange, nothing changed for me with watchOS 9, apart from the fact that notifications scroll down from the top now
I use tap to show though, that might explain it

Yeah tap to show does hide them. Before it never showed a preview of the message when the wrist was down. I don’t know why Apple changed it. I did the feedback and let them know. Who knows if it changes

I am having this same issue as well. I don't like that while my wrist is down, on watch os9 the notifications now show not only the picture but the first line of the message. I get texts all the time that I'd rather stay private, I can see the situation where I'm at the table and someone can read that line on my wrist if positioned in the right way.

I tried the tap to show option and while it works, it definitely changes the experience of the interface with the Watch and notifications. Wish there was a solution for this so it just went back to showing the basics for a text or email without the actual information.

Just upgraded to WatchOS 9 and I'm surprised this isn't getting discussed more. What's the point of flashing a small portion of the notification's text along with the app icon for a third of a second?

I would agree, hard to believe this isn’t a bug of some kind. I can’t imagine people want their notifications this visible. It’s totally different than what happens on the phone.

Doesn’t changing this setting fix your concern?

Not really, I still want to see if I’m getting a text or email when my wrist is down, I just don’t want the message to be shown at the same time. This is how all the other watch os’s worked before 9. Now you can read what the text message says, which a lot of times I don’t want people to be able to see.

If you turn that setting off, you still get a tap, but the notification doesn’t show until you raise your wrist. So you still know you have something to look at, but no one else knows you got a notification at all. And you can read the notification either right away by raising your wrist, or later in private from the Notification Center.

I’ll fool around with it and see, but it doesn’t change that this is a big change from the previous setup and I shouldn’t have to do a workaround to make this work. But appreciate the tip/feedback.

None of this addresses the fundamental problem: the Watch used to show the icon and app name only when you received a notification, and then depending on the setting Mw0103 highlighted, it'd quickly scroll up to show the notification text when your wrist was down or up. Now the Watch shows the app icon and a little slice of the notification text itself. For what earthly purpose, I can't imagine. It looks so sloppy, like how I imagine notifications look on a Samsung watch.

The new system is a hugh upgrade.

It's very simple.

Now, with AOD, you can read the messages without touch the watch. If the messages are short, you can read it in its entirety. If the messages are long, then you only can read the first few words (less is nothing).

And now, if you receive several messages from apps like Telegram o Whatsapp, all messages will be displayed successively.

This means that now you can follow a conversation without touch the watch. This is hugh.

This was a very basic thing that I didn't understand when I bought an Apple Watch. It's just common sense.

That’s exactly my point, it’s a major break in privacy for someone sitting next to me to be able to see a couple of lines of text or email. There’s enough that shows up now on the notification that can be NSFW or not meant for others eyes that it makes me very uncomfortable. In the past I never had to worry about this, why they made this change I’ll never understand. I have at least changed the message notification to not show up when wrist is down, which has worked for me so far. But it’s a workaround I shouldn’t have had to do.

It's also pointless to show a small-font, truncated version of the text for half a second before showing the real text. I almost want to say it looks like a mistake but I know that, for whatever reason, they did this on purpose.

I was waiting for this thread sice monday. It feels so odd that first the short version in bold text and then the whole message in normal text size.
First I thought it is the fault of the app where I´ve seen it for the first time, but no.
Totally weird behaviour.
