WatchOS compatibility with iOS

I've decided to part ways with my s7 and give it to a friend who needs a new Apple Watch. I've never sold/given away a used watch before, and all I'm finding online is phone model compatibility, not seeing much useful about the OS. I already updated the watch to watchOS 26. Will this force my friend (currently on iOS 18) to update to iOS 26 in order to use the watch?

iOS works with lower or equal versions of watchOS but not the other way around.
