I have a strange problem. iPhone 11 Pro Max, and Series 5 Apple Watch. My phone is on iOs 14.0, My watch is on WatchOs 6.2.8. I have never had a beta or beta profile on either device.

When I tried to update my watch, it downloads and then I get an error "Cannot verify the iOS update because you are not connected to the internet".

Naturally the phone and watch are connected to the same wlan which has internet access. I tried deleting the download file and rebooting watch and phone. After reboot and retry, I get the same error. I have uncoupled and reset the watch, set it up as new and retried, Same issue. Spoke to a Genius who suggested reseting the phone. So, did that also set as a new device. Same problem.

As Series 5 and earlier only support 2.4Ghz, I made sure that the 5Ghz wlan was disabled, made no difference, as the watch was connected to 2.4Ghz network and could get data (for example for weather).

I have currently a watch and phone that have been wiped no iCloud no apps nothing, and still the same problem. Looks like I have a 6 month old watch that can not be updated. :(

Any suggestions on what else to try?

if the bluetooth is turned on on both your phone and watch, the watch's wifi won't be on. (you might have it enabled, but the watch will have it powered down) so the 2.4 problem shouldn't exist.
having the 5GHz enabled or disabled won't matter, as long as your router is broadcasting 2.4. Since the watch doesn't have a 5 radio, it has no effect one way or the other.
and as long as your network is configured properly, then devices should be able to talk to each other, no matter which network they're connected to.

on your watch's control center (swipe up on any watch face) what icon do you have at the top?
green rectangle? blue wifi bars? green dots?

if you are truly trying to update over wifi, try over bluetooth,

where are you updating your watch from?
in the settings app on the watch, or the watch app on the phone?
try the other one

Try rebooting your router, it sounds silly, but it can sort out weirdness.

I had the same problem with my iPhone 8 and the Apple Watch Series 6, the solution was to run the update directly on the Apple Watch via the Settings app on the Watch.

I would send it to Apple and have them update it for you. It is a free service. They send you a FedEx shipping box in 2 days and then they pay for overnight shipping both ways. I know it will be a little inconvenient but, you have tried all you can and support didn’t have an answer. You would have your watch back in 2 days, more than likely.

Throw my name into the ring. Same here. S4 cannot update to 7.0.1 or now 7.0.2. I was running the beta over the summer but all devices no longer have any beta profile on. The watch just won’t update.
