How does one activate the water expulsion feature outside of the workout app? Like after a swim or shower when not in workout mode?

Before getting the watch wet, lock the screen by swiping up from the bottom to display the control centre, then press the water droplet. This will lock the screen. When done twist the crown to unlock the screen and start the water expulsion sound.

Thank you!

will the watch get damaged if you take a shower or go for a swim without putting it in water mode?

What about when it's raining or if you spill a drink? You won't have put it in water mode then.

All water mode does is lock the screen so that you don't have unintentional interaction with the screen due to water. Unlocking the screen by rotating the crown also causes the speaker to expel water. You do not have to turn on water mode to prevent water damage - the watch is always water resistant. It will work just as well to turn on water mode after you go swimming just for the purposes of expelling water out of the speaker cavity.
