We've been stumped by the following scenario with our Macbook running Leopard. When we use the computer it runs on battery power and shows the 'not charging' sign even if it is plugged in and the Mag shows green. The battery shows 'Normal'. When we shut the lid the battery charges, but only when the lid is shut.

Any thoughts on how to "fix" the issue to allow the computer to recharge while we are using it?

OK, it's a 60 watt charger.

It's probably your charger not getting enough electricity to power the display and the internals when its on. It charges when it's close because it can handle the small amount of power necessary. Just replace your charger.:D

i can agree with that, you might not need to go for more power than 60watts, because that is what is recommended for the macbook, but i would say get a new charger with the newer connector, i had to make the investment myself

Thank you to all. New charger in the budget.

I doubt that will help....

Sounds as if you need a new battery connector - there is a reed switch in the connector which activates the sleep function when the magnet in the screen frame becomes close. It sounds as if the switch is faulty.

Easy to fix and cheap - a lot cheaper than a new charger !!
