iPod touch Way around auto correction?

I was wondering if there is a way around auto correction when typing? It is nice on some words I misspell, but on others I don't want it to auto correct.
Thanks.
 
When the autocorrect text pops up, there is an (X) button on the right. If you can tap that, it closes the autocorrect box.
