Can someone go to ATT sometime this month, buy a 3G capable phone (one with a high ebay resale value), get unlimited medianet data for $15/month, then just buy the new iphone without the subsidy and switch the sim cards?

The $15 savings a month ends up being $360 over 2 years.

Would you lose any functionality by doing this?

it will not work. you have to set up your SIM through itunes. if the sim is not set up with the phone, it will not work.

you HAVE to set everything up through iTunes and use the iPhone data plan.

Is this something new to the 3G iphone? I know with the old one you could stick any activated sim into the iphone and it would work, just like any other phone?

nothing different -- i tried it on my first gen when switching from my razr and it did not work.

you must use an itunes activated SIM in an iPhone.

No, you couldn't.

As far as the MediaNet scam goes, some people have pulled it off so far. It's meant for dumb phones only.

Other MediaNet users have been caught and ended up with bills of $18,000 or much more, according to a fellow on HoFo who had it happen to him.

Was your phone unlocked at the time?

Does the phone work but data does not? The first gen phone I tried it on, my roomates, did not have a data plan at the time. But I thought I had heard of people doing this?
