Please excuse the noobness here, but is there a way to put a folder in the Dock so that it just opens Finder instead of a stack? OS X won't let me drag it to the left side, nor can I find a option to make folders on the right open in Finder by default. I'm running Snow Leopard. Thanks!

If you make an alias of the folder (Command-L or via menus/right click) and drag the alias to the Dock, clicking it will open the folder in the Finder rather than popping up a stack/list of it. This works in Leopard, at least--not at home to try SL right now.

Thanks, that worked!
