Way to Upgrade?

I think I may have found a way to upgrade the iOS w/out losing your data.
First, back the device up. Then, install iOS 4.2, lose the jailbreak, then re-jailbreak it and restore your apps and data.

Would that work? (for the sake of saving all of my progress in various games)
